Kylian Mbappé’s rise from Bondy prodigy to Real Madrid superstar owes much to the man who first spotted his gift: his father, Wilfrid Mbappé.
Who is Wilfrid Mbappé?
Wilfrid Mbappé, 55, is a former youth coach and football consultant who spent 25 years at AS Bondy in the Paris suburbs. Born in Cameroon in October 1970, he moved to France and built a reputation for developing talent. More than 20 players he coached turned pro, including Arsenal defender William Saliba.
How Wilfrid shaped Kylian’s career
Wilfrid coached Kylian at AS Bondy from age six through his teenage years. He later became sporting director for the club’s Under-10 to Under-17 teams. His son credits him with instilling the belief that attacking brilliance matters more than defensive grunt work.
“A bad season for Kylian is an exceptional one for anyone else,” Wilfrid said. He has also defended Kylian’s defensive contributions, arguing that his son’s goal tally—60 in a season—should silence critics.
Family ties and teamwork
Wilfrid and Kylian’s mother, Fayza Lamari, split in 2021 but still manage their sons’ careers together. Kylian’s younger brother Ethan is a pro footballer, and the family also adopted Jirès Kembo Ekoko, who played professionally.
Today Wilfrid remains one of Kylian’s closest advisors, overseeing the sporting side of his career while Fayza handles contracts.
World Cup spotlight on Kylian Mbappé
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kylian has already scored eight goals for France. Only one behind Lionel Messi’s all-time record of 21, he could break it in Qatar this summer. The French captain, 27, led Les Bleus to the 2018 title and now eyes a second crown in 2026.
Wilfrid’s early lessons still guide Kylian on soccer’s biggest stage.
